if Kelly isnīt a Muslim Assyrian...I donīt know who is...however...in preparing to make a portrait of Che...I keep going over in my mind all the reasons he made such a powerul impact on me and so many others and will continue to do so. Itīs fun and romantic to think about running around a jungle and shooting and getting shot at..especially for noble goals if not just for the fun of it. The truth is far from that of course, but part of Guevaraīs appeal and that of the rest of them too, but his especially, was that he didnīt "grow up" in a sense...that is he left one success, travelled to Africa to lend a hand there backed thug, Saddam Batista Hussein Rios Mont et al...he told a bunch of adventuring American students who travelled to the Sierra Maestra to join the guerillas that they were needed more in the halls of Washington where this "octopus" of American Fopreign Thefts orginated from. He probably knew they were CIA plants, but even had they not been his point was clear..he could not go to America and protest or even get in...he was a doctor and a Latin American who could no longer stand by and allow Uncle Sam to do as he pleased...as if there were no caring parents south of the border who had an interest in the welfare of their children too...or loved them and wished for their future as those of the north did. Had there been any other way to combat Americaīs interfernce and illegal activities...any court to take them to...they would have...Castro is a lawyer after all. This same cynnical blind spot in American thinking still operates...we reserve the right to beat the shit out of anybody for any reason, or none at all...but we become even MORE incensed if that person raises a hand in self-defense...or god love us...to fight back. This goes totally against human nature...but itīs understandable, so does most of what Americans think and do. And in Bolivia, Ashur love the man...he met his end as heīd lived...with the courage of his convictions. It was doomed from the start...Bolivia, having received the same scare the other thugs and goons had, just recently had enacted a program of land reform which gave next to nothing to the campesinos...but it was more nothing than theyīd ever had...and they wished to keep it. Guerilla war succeeds if the fighters have the support of the surrounding peasants and villagers...and it can never succeed if they refuse to help or worse...turn them in. Maybe it became obvious to Che and maybe he slackened his pace or dropped his guard...but I donīt think so. I think he would have fought on the the bitter end, as he did...even knowing it was doomed...because it would succeed in the long run anyway. What made the man more dear to me than anything before was revealed in one of his last entries in the diary he kept...a day when theyīd set up an ambush to catch a government patrol...and with a clear shot at the back of a government soldier...Che didnīt shoot...and wrote about it. Maybe at that point he felt one more dead 16 year old more or less would make no difference...but I rather like to think he grew up...and realized that as guerillas they were battling the least responsible, the weakest and the saddest links at the bottom of the chain that was oppressing them as well. Kidnap and tear the fingernails off of the leaders...by all means...they teach them that in Georgia, USA. But kill some motherīs son who himself has no job and no future..who didnīt have the breaks Che did or Castro in being born into the middle-class...who couldnīt afford Law School or Medical School or the leisure to sit in coffee shops and discuss philosophy or bum around on a motorcycle but instead was born into poverty and worked since the age of five helping the family...was no way to improve society...BUT nevertheless...here was a human who did it all...learned...grew and paid his debt honorably. What Kathy Kelley and other Americans need to do is begin to the lay the groundwork that can bring their own oppresors to a halt and shut down enough of the economy to affect the PROFITS...not the operating expenses...because none of these new CEOīs are in it for the Family Business or Honor..or for a vague ethic...they are here and killing children to make PROFIT...and you donīt have to shut them down completely to rob them of what they seek the most...PROFIT. It isnīt romantic...it isnīt cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians...and it has to be on a larger scale than anything else ever attempted like it before...but it can be done...because the little secret is that most of these huge corporation have a very small profit margin AS A PERCENTAGE of their entire take...a five pecent dip...even a 2.5 percent dip can close their executive lunch room and shut down the state of the art spa and gym...and itīs downhill from there. Demonstrating and bearing witness is fine and noble...but it doesnīt hit them where they live...in their bank accounts. Kelly is aiming for an increasingly hard to find target...the soul. Hit the bank instead. --------------------- |
