Check out that book "Desert Queen" about the life of the British woman Gertrude Bell, if you haven't. She's the one who drew Iraq's present-day borders.... I think she was a spy for the British around WWI. Here's a website about her which includes some interesting diary excerpts as well as photos of Iraq (and other places) during her time there. The photos are REALLY, REALLY cool to look at.... She's a bit blunt in her diary, and it IS written from the perspective of a British woman of that time, as can only be expected... so she tends to sound a bit Orientalist at times....
