Hi all,
Just thought I'd give you a quick review of a great event that I just experienced. It was called "Chaldean Idol", modeled after the ever-so-popular "American Idol".

C.A.R.E., a great Chaldean charity that I used to be actively involved in, organized the event and it was a resounding success. From a financial standpoint of gauging success, the event was sold out and everyone seemed to have a great time. From a participation standpoint, there were over 100 contestants who entered, and out of them 10 finalists were chosen.

The whole idea behind the event was to encourage (relatively young) Chaldean vocalists to pursue their talents. This is a noble idea, considering the active discouragement that most young Chaldeans get from their parents relating to the arts. I'm not making this up...I've even met music teachers who have told me that the hardest students to teach are Chaldeans, since their parents react negatively when their children want music lessons...

But you couldn't tell that from the performances tonight. 3 finalists were chosen from the 10 by Local "celebrity" Judges, many of whom made complete asses of themselves (with the exception of Karen Newman), and there was also a 'behind the scenes' dvd that we watched with many of the audition takes and outtakes. We were also treated to a very funny song entitled "Sweet Home West-a-Bloomfield" (to the tune of Sweet Home Alabama) by Steve Acho which deftly poked fun at many common stereotypes in our community.

The winner of hte contest won a $1000 prize, as well as studio time for a demo. A good time was had by all.

Could "Assyrian Idol" be far behind?
