...he said it first. As outgoing President in 1961 and from his position as supreme allied commander during World War II, Eisenhower saw the growing power and combined force of the huge corporations who'd profited from war...and the cozy relationship to the military whose job was to defend us from enemies. Only somehting new was taking shape and he tried to warn us...told us to beware of the "Military Industrial Complex", a term he coined...of the symbiotic relationship of the two of them...how companies with ties to generals stood to profit in ways never before thought possible...only thing was: We needed an enemy. That's the part Eisenhower left unsaid...for us to fill in. Else, why the warning? If America is legitimately attacked, as it was in World War II...why warn the American People to watch out for this sinister relationship? It HAD to be sinister to cause our only five star General and two term president to issue such a warning in his farewell adress to the country. The implied threat to America...the thing he warns us of is not merely the creation of divisions at each major Corporation dedicated to manufacturing war equipment...what's bad about that...IF you have a real enemy? He was warning us to watch out for the manufacturing of ENEMIES...as an excuse to secure orders for all that equipment...the money for which would come from our Treasury...from our pockets..from our savings...from what we earned to make a better life for our children. Eisenhower was as grateful as any American to those corporations that swung into action and produced the material needed to defeat Nazi Germany...that wasn't what he was warning about. Perhaps he saw in the whacko fear-mongering of the 50s an attempt to CREATE a villain..another Hitler or worse with which to keep Americans in perpetual fear..as willing and eager to make those personal sacrifices AND curb the effect of the Constitution, for instance, in its use to win rights for Blacks...as happened in the desegeration of public schools in the 50s which shook Whites to their core..here was a document that was THEIR enemey, that could be used "against them". Maybe he saw it coming...saw the benefits that came with demonizing the poor people of the world who were "different" and therefore could be presented as evil and weird too...as so many people benfied from demonizing Americans who were also "different". Anyway...it's this buisness of manufacturing enemies Eisenhower really warned us of...making boogeymen so we'd sign on to anything to be "protected"...he certainly wasn't warning us about making weapons for legitimate defense...but it's gone way past anything legitimate...the war on Iraq is one of the biggest crimes against humanity in the modern era..far, far outstripping whatever the boys think they suffered in Simele...and it should be said that these very boys, who cry about injustice when it comes to them..have been among the most eager to visit it in far greater numbers and in more sadistic ways than any other nut case alive today...something we can add to the dismal and bloody history of their Church "that never did anything to anybody"....when anyone was looking. --------------------- |
