...as in Stalingrad before the winter of 1942 deep in the Volga bend. It was there that Von Paulus's 6th Army and Hoth's 5th Panzer Army where engaged in street fighting against Russians who used Molotov cocktails to bleed the Germans to death. Street by street house to house they fought. After the Germans had captured 90% of the flattened city he declared the battle over and bragged about its capture to the German people. In November just as the first snows began to fall it was the Russians' turn to attack and they hit the Germans' weak allies annihilating the Hungarian and Italian armies holding the German flanks and encircling the Germans in a classical pincer movement. Trapped in Stalingrad were over 250,000 German troops who slowly began to starve to death. After all was said and done over 90,0000 Germans surrenedered and were marched to Siberia. Most died along the way sucumbing to malnutrition and disease. Of the 90,000 captured at Stalingrad only 5,000 would ever return to post War germany in 1949. Stalingrad marked the zenith of German conquest and was the singlee decisive battle responsible for the defeat of the Gemran army. Not the Americans, not the british and definately not the French could ever have defeated the Germans on the Western front if Stalingrad had not been so decisive. Baghdadigrad stand as a lesson in World War III, the "War on Terrorism." If today's fascists can be defeated in Baghdadigrad then perhaps Syria and Iran can be spared. --------------------- |
