The Long Predicted Exodus of Christians from Iraq has begun. Facing a June 30th deadline for transfer of power, a `Temporary Constitution` that reads in Article 7 , `Islam is the Official Religion of the State` and the most recent humiliation for the community - the failure to receive even one position on the Executive Council and only one Ministry Post - the Ministry of Emigration , the Christians of Iraq are making plans to leave Iraq.

…That`s funny…they got the ministry of “GET OUT!!!” The interesting thing is that all the ones lamenting the Diaspora got the hell out themselves..and in true Christian fashion fashion want to sacrifice someone ELSE!
On a recent night the Church had to spend more time on filling out the Baptismal forms needed for leaving the country than they did on the service. ` says Amir, a deacon at a local Church who does not want his name published.

We have been flooded with parishioners desperate to leave the country and as they cannot get an exit permit without a Baptismal Certificate from the Church we have been swamped with requests.

Most of the Christians in Iraq are Assyrians - the original people of Iraq. The Assyrians were the people of Nineveh - present day Mosul - where Jonah in the Bible came.

The Assyrian Church - known officially as the Assyrian Church of the East, is the oldest continually existing Church in the world, and the people are the only in the world who still speak Aramaic, the language of Jesus.

According to figures from the previous regieme there were 2.5 million Assyrian Christians in the country with an estimated 3.5 million outside the country for a worldwide total of as many as 6 million, many of which would return to Iraq if they had a future.

The American funded TV Station, Al Iraqia broadcasts moslem programs four times every day and for two hours each Friday but nothing for the other religions. The recent inauguration of the new government was opened by a moslem mullah giving a long message from the koran and and prayer, but none of our Priests were invited at all. Why do they do this? Why do the Americans promote moslems? They need to promote equality and democracy and freedom, not moslem dictatorship!

The community is working on two projects - one to establish a 24 hour nationwide hotline to provide security for the daily acts of intimidation that is much of the cause for the panic and a nationwide network of `safe houses` to take care of the community, when as they believe following the handover Iraq descends into chaos and civil war.

In addition a proposal for an 'Assyrian Regional Government' based on Article 54 of the Transitional Administrative Law is being circulated in Iraq and in Washinton in a last ditch effort to persuade the community to stay.

What George is talking about is an American funded Television Station called `Al Iraquia`. Amazingly and quite brazenly, the station stops all programming four times a day to broadcast moslem programming including the reading of the koran and moslem prayers.

Did Bush not just make a new law allowing our tax dollars to go to Christian school madrassahs? Start your own radio stations..that`s what happens in a democracy too.

Every Friday there is a two hour block where moslem `televangelists` preach through the airwaves on various moslem teachings, all paid for by the American Taxpayer and every moslem holiday is a daylong cavalcade of moslem clerics teaching in a non-stop `televangelist` style the koran.

More amazing is a quick check of the station itself and one is surprised to find many of the staff are not moslems. `We feel very bad having to do this, but what can we do` says a staffer, afraid to give his name `it is a moslem country and this is how they do it. It is not right. I come from Lebanon and in our country we are careful to do any religious programming fairly between all religions - or none at all. It does not seem to me to be the right message to give if you are trying to create a democratic society. But after all, I just work here.`

When reminded that the Transitional Administrative Law clearly protects freedom of Religion he says `We were told it is a moslem constitution and so this is the right thing to do.`

I sat in the Inauguration Ceremony room, first enduring a long winded, completely unacceptable and out of place sermon and long winded prayer by a moslem mullah who seemed to be wearing tennis shoes.

I sat there in the hall in Baghdad on a hot, dusty afternoon in what could only be termed a nightmare. Not once in any speech did any say `thank you` to the Americans for liberating their country, getting rid of Sadaam and embarking on a reconstruction program the likes of which have not been seen in a generation.

..Oh JEEZUS!!! There you go AGAIN!!! Are you out to get the Christians in Iraq KILLED??? Before they can leave??? Is that now the “strategy”?? Which Iraq besides you Christian loons, believed the Americans were coming to SAVE them? The same people who made war against their CHILDREN for FOURTEEN YEARS??? You`re still peddling this crap and have the audacity to wonder why you weren`t included??? Be surprised you haven`t been shot, NOT that you weren`t given government jobs!!!

One of the Assyrian leaders said it `the only hope is for the Americans. We cannot do anything here, but they can in Washington`.

I just spent nearly one month in Washington and met with nearly all the Senators on the Armed Service Committee, the Foreign Relations committee, Secretary Rumsfield, Armitage, and in Baghdad with Mr. Brahimi, and each of the new Government Ministers except for one.

To each carefully explaining the case of the Assyrians. Is there hope? Yes there is! In spite of the failure not one American or Iraqi government official disagreed on the idea of an area for the Assyrians - not one! The usual reaction?

…they take pity on you…you idiot. Which of them, right now when they need all the pleas just such as the ones you`ve made..is going to throw you out?

`If the Kurds can have one why not the Assyrians - why have you not said anything before?`

So the truth is out! Not only have our leaders in Iraq failed us, but those in the US too! Now what do we do? In this issue I have carefully noted the fax numbers, addresses and other information for the key people in the US Government.

Please take a moment after your anger has subsided and write a nice letter demanding an Assyrian Regional Government in Iraq and fax it to them. And then take a moment and pray that God will, in the last remaining days before June 30th do a miracle!

What you were hoping for was a Dictatorship…but a Christian one backed by American guns that would FORCE a triangle on the Muslim majority…it will never work. The senators you claim to have met..which I heartily disbelieve…were merely being politic..after all, they are politicians.
