The London Times September 15, 1924 THE IRAQI FRONTIER Turkish Vali's Capture (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) BAGHDAD, SEPT. 4 (by mail). Considerable interest has been aroused here by the announcement that the Turks have decided to lay their case for the inclusion of Mosul in Turkey before the assembly of the League of Nations. In the meantime an incident recently occurred in the Hakkiari country, on the northern frontier, which illustrates the kind of thing which is likely to be continually happening should any part of the Assyrian country be subjected to Turkish rule. It appears that Halil Rifaat Bey, the Turkish Vali of Hakkiari, was touring in the mountainous no-man's land between Julamerk and Chal, immediately north of the present administrative boundary of Iraq. He unwisely attempted to make capital out of his tour for propaganda purposes, and the impression was created that the Vali was marching to Chal at the head of a large force with the object of forcibly subduing the Assyrian tribes of that neighbourhood. Even more unwisely, the Vali actually ventured into the country of the Tkhuma, one of the most warlike of the Assyrian tribes, with an escort of only a few gendarmes. In the meantime the trans-frontier Assyrian has sent an appeal to the Iraqi authorities at Amadia, to whom they are not un-naturally inclined to look for protection. A very proper reply was sent to them by the local qaimmaqam warning them against taking any offensive action against the Vali, who was not credited with any hostile intentions. Before these instructions had reached their destination the inevitable had happened, the Vali's escort came into collision with the Tkhuma. Each side naturally accuses the other of having fired the first shot, but in any case a skirmish ensued in which the Turks were outnumbered and most of them, including Halil Rifaat Bey himself, were taken prisoner and their baggage looted. The Vali was taken by his captors not to Baghdad as reported from Constantinople, but across the frontier to an Assyrian Malik within Iraqi territory. The later, who as it happened had received the instructions from Amadia, showed them to the Tkhuma tribesmen and persuaded them to release their prisoners and to send them back to Julamerk. When news of the incident reached Mosul the Administrative Inspector went at once to Amadia to arrange for the release of the Halil Rifaat Bey, only to find that he had been released already. Knowing, as we do, that the local government officials not only acted with scrupulous correctness throughout, but that they even attempted to dissuade the trans-frontier Assyrians (for whose actions they cannot be held responsible) from taking hostile action against the Vali, we may learn several, instructive lessons from this incident, viz.:- 1. Assyrians whose habitat is to the north of the boundary at present adopted for administrative purposes look to the Iraqi government as their natural protector. 2. The Assyrians, having thrown in their lot with the Allies against the Turks in the war, will never again tolerate the presence of Turkish officials in their midst, or any attempt by the Turks to administer their country. 3. Turkish officials hold the Iraqi government responsible for the conduct of the Assyrian tribe in the Hakkiari country which the Turkish government claims to control. In fact, the whole significance of this incident so strikingly supports the British case for the inclusion of the Hakkiari country in Iraq that the Turks may be partially excused for saying that it was deliberately stage-managed by the Iraqi government. There is no other way open to them of explaining away a piece of evidence which is as damning to their case. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Addendum - When the biased British article states "...only to find that he had been released already." what it does not mention is that he had been killed by the tribe of Tkhumna Gawaya. This last piece of the puzzle was relayed to me by an elder of the Tkhuma tribe, Binyamin Younan in Hassake, Syria, 2002. This incident just like Simele was used by the British to secure their hold of Mosul and its vast oil reserves as the article clearly demonstrates. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now as for your Aprim, are you so stupid that you can't see bait dangling on a hook in front of you? Can you not spell cul-de-sac? Thank Ashur Warda was smart enough to stay clear of me. How many times do I have to publicly embarrass you before you stop walking into them with your chin up all the time? Of course I use shock tactics precisely to get peoples' attention and now that I have your undivided attention I just want to tell them - through you - some more FACTs. FACT. Approximately 27,000 Assyrian children under the age of 5 have died in the past 14 years due to U.S. led sanctions against imposed to remove CIA trained Saddam. FACT. Approximately 611 innocent Assyrian people have been killed during the latest U.S. led invaasion of Iraq. FACT. Approxiamtely 5% (i.e. 40,000 out of a total of 750,000) of our Assyrian population has lef the homeland in the last 2 years. Now that you know the FACTS you have no excuse, unlike the Germans of WW2 to plead ignorance. You can now proudly explain to your children in 30 years how you stood around and argiued about Mar Ignoramus's donkey's stool sample from 380 AD while our children were killed in Iraq using your tax dollars. And if Aprim doesn't like it I suggest he goes and gets FACT. --------------------- |
