There's a general misconception that only Assyrians today speak Aramaic. There are quite a number of different groups that still speak Aramaic, especially Iranian Jews like the Nash Didan (www.nashdidan.com) and other Iraqi-Syrian Jewish clans. And, of course the Mandeans of southern Iraq also speak it....and they aren't Assyrians at all. If anything, they are descendants of Babylonians or the Jews of the Babylonian Captivity. This is not to mention, of course, the modern-day Arameans of the Maloula area and within the former areas inhabited in Turkey. -Paul --------------------- |
