I agree with you on so many points, but you know, we really do live in a man's world, STILL. I am like you - I like to see all people as individuals. That doesn't stop men from objectifying me, though. You know, sometimes, I'm talking to a guy, and I notice that he's not listening to a SINGLE word I'm saying. Rather, his eyes are on my breasts. And yes, men, we see every single goddamn sly look you cast our directions, and for the sensible ones among us who aren't attracted to you, it's GROSS! It's so goddamn FRUSTRATING! I'm not saying this like it's something to be proud of - to be stared at - but rather because I'm incredibly DISAPPOINTED. I want to be taken SERIOUSLY. I don't want someone to mistake me for a nurse simply because I am female, look young, and wear a white coat. Why doesn't "Future Ms. PhD or MD" come to their minds instead? Get your goddamn male fantasies out of my life! How many times did I speak to my male boss with a really incredible idea or some keen insight, only to watch him completely ignore my words? THEN, I see my ideas published in a few journals a month or a year later. Meanwhile, he's listening to the practically RETARDED male student's ideas, encouraging him, saying he'll get published by such and such a date, having lunches with him, inviting him to talks with him. What about me? Am I going to continue to be automatically dismissed every single time I speak simply because I'm young, female, and possibly attractive? Most male bosses think, when they see a pretty, young lady, that they don't have to care about her future - if things don't go right, she'll just marry some rich dude. What the HELL?! What if I want a career??? What if *I* want just a bit of power in my future? Why is it that my words seem to fall into some goddamn vacuum between his ears? What's even MORE insulting is when some man thinks that you're talking to him because you "want" him. It's like the idea of an intelligent female being who wants to talk about a completely *asexual* topic is foreign to him. And if you complain, they think you're being like their wife and NAGGING - they block you out, because years of listening to her probably legitimate complaints have trained them to do this - and don't see your concern as a legitimate complaint. They don't do that to their male employees/colleagues! I can't write any more right now because I'm practically shaking with rage!... And yes, I realize that not ALL men are like this, just the egotistical pigs who think the world revolves around them. The corporate media has made feminism a bad word, unfortunately, either that or redefined it in purely superficial terms. --------------------- |
