>A storm of outrage hit Smith and Carlos immediately. For disrespecting the "Star Spangled Banner" and the Olympic games, the IOC forced the U.S. Olympic Committe to withdraw them from the relays, banish them from the Olympic Village, strip their medals and expel them from the U.S. Olympic team. Most of white America was also outraged at their actions, and both men experienced a heavy backlash upon their return home. Nonetheless, their legend has grown, and this classic black-and-white image has become a symbol of the struggle for equality for black athletes in America. ..the same was done to Jim Thorpe...a Native American and possibly the single best athlete EVER. The man was phenominal..there wasn't a aport he didn't excel at...he WAS the track team at Carlyle...a Native American college where he lettered and stared in baseball, basketball and football...he went on to compete in the Olympics because there was no rule specifically banning Native Americans...and he won medals I think in every event he entered. Right after returning home the IOC discovered that this proud man born in abject poverty in a nation stolen from under him where he was now a second or no class citizen...had played bush league baseball one summer while in college...for $35.00. He too was stripped of all his medals and his records and presence wiped out. His old coach at Carlyle, Pop warner rescued him from a broken life as an alcoholic, after a few seasons of pro football "that's just the way those people are"...and together they formed Pop Warner Football, the Little League of tackle football that spread throughout America. Jim Thorpe's crime was being Dark...and showing up the usually pampered darlings you had to be back then to be able to afford participating in the Olympics at all. But he's a hero to every Darkie kid and white one with a heart and conscience...his achievements all the more glorious when you see to what lengths he was chased to ground and how much higher the hurdles were set for him... The film title, with Burt Lancaster in the lead, says it all in the title..."Jim Thorpe...All American"...and TRUE American. --------------------- |
