xxx That, my dear, is a projection. : )

xxx In my book, it's not an insult to call a person a "dog." It's a compliment.

> ...besides which there's a reason calling a person a dog has been fighting words for centuries...we don't say , you son of a horse...we say son of a bitch...dogs have this thing where they show themselves meek and mild and non threatening to your face, then run around and bark or nip at your back...very like Christians...I realize it's a defense mechanism well suited to their old days when they hunted in packs and any dog caught out alone had to say..."who me"? with body language...and then maybe get a good shot at whoever when they turned their back...

xxx I don't think that dogs evolved that way from the wild. Had two hiking companions growing up - one was a long haired german shepherd and the other was an alaskan malamute/wolf hybrid. They were the scariest looking things for strangers to see, but they took good care of the family. One time, a rottweiler followed me home from a bike ride. The rottweiler was friendly toward me, but posed a threat to the dogs. As the shepherd and malamute mix were ripping into the rottweiler's neck, I, a little kid at the time, just walked up to the shepherd, put a hand on each jaw, and pried open the shepherd's mouth (and my mother pried open the malamute's mouth). We pulled them away from the rottweiler so the rottweiler could run back home, yelping.... Anyway, the point is that the dogs could have gotten caught up in the fight and accidentally hurt me or my mom, but they didn't. They loved us too much. Here's a pic of a dog that looks a lot like my shepherd looked (he passed away a few years ago): http://www.gsrescue.org/biosother/dbduke5.htm . Both dogs were independent (lived outdoors all of their lives and spent most of their time in the woods), would wander off the trails when we hiked, but would ALWAYS come back when someone called them and would have killed anyone or anything that posed a threat to anyone in the family. They took care of the family - we never had to take care of them.
