That sounded like you were in a no win situation and I am sorry you and your family went through that... I hope you are all safe now. I was on vacation a little over 10 years ago in Mexico and was in a volleyball tournament and broke my f*in elbow and had to go to the hospital, and on the way back the taxi driver robbed me... so I have never made another trip to Mexico cause I felt so unsafe there. But glad you and your family is okay. I think you are too kind hearted and forgiving as am I and what happens is people take advantage and then one day you wake up and you suddenly realize how wounded you are by it all... well, at least that is how i feel sometimes.
