http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200408/s1179706.htm Last Update: Wednesday, August 18, 2004. 5:49pm (AEST) US 'unlikely' to storm Najaf holy sites US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says United States forces are unlikely to storm holy places in the Iraqi city of Najaf. Sporadic fighting in the area is continuing between US troops and supporters of the rebel cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. American and Iraqi soldiers have been involved in serious clashes with militia members around some of the most sacred sites in Islam for almost two weeks. Earlier, Sadr declined to meet a delegation from the Iraqi national conference. The delegation had travelled to Najaf to try to end the fighting. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says at some stage the Iraqi government will have to find a comprehensive solution. "It's unlikely that the US forces would be the ones that would deal with the holy places, that's just not something that we are likely to do," he said. "I would think that the Iraqi forces would be the ones that would deal with that, because it's such a significant thing to the religion." -- AFP --------------------- |
