...there are so many interesting facets to what Paul has been so bold to reveal...for instance, an Assyrian marching through new territory would see the Art and Gods of new people....and would respond something like, "That's interesting...look at that"...and go on through....he wouldn't feel the need to smash what wasn't to his liking. Paul can have all the feelings he likes about the artifacts of many many people...he doesn't have to accept them or like them...he doesn't have to like Assyrian art to be a Christian...as devout as he would like to be...but smash it? Interesting. If the Assyrian was there to conquer, to get tribute or just swallow up into the empire..he still wouldn't kill the people for their wrong beliefs..neither would he smash their art...if he didn't care for it...he'd leave it alone..if he valued it, he'd take it with him..especially if it was the god of the people he conquered and was relocating..he'd know how much the symbol meant to them and not wanting to grind them into dust by humiliating them and their gods...he'd allow them their religius symbols and beliefs so they could continue whole and contended and become an asset to the Empire..and it was in this way that they were able to get so many people of different backgrounds working together..even in a babel of voices and creeds and dress and food...to create something no one pure group...like say them Hebrews, could have achieved if they killed everyone and destroyed everything. The times when the Assyrians were most brutal came after people they'd already incorporated rebelled...and then a violent response only came after repeated offences.... Paul is from a people who destroy what they don't like...who hate what they can't love. His determination to destroy something that is an offense to his god tells more about Paul..his pettiness and lack of self-respect than it does about Jesus...who would never countenance such a thing. Paul's gambit isn't about Jesus or God or Art or Paganism..it is an acting out of the crucifixion all over again. From hatred and violence will come peace of mind for Paul. Jesus could have lived...our art could be allowed to survive...but then where's the "benefit"? --------------------- |
