I have been reading the articles at Commondreams and Counterpunch lately. As an informed citizen of the U.S., I realize that we are all entitled to free speech and that there are people who try to influence administrations, regardless of party affiliation, for their personal benefit and to the detriment of other human beings. I also appreciate honest criticism of both parties... if it is enlightening. HOWEVER, there are people who are pushing for Bush to become president from several sides - Republican and left - and I sincerely believe that those who are pushing for Bush to be re-elected, because they wish to see rebellion against the U.S. government by its own citizens, do NOT have enough foresight to see what can happen, should such a possibility arise: Outcome 1.) Bush brainwashes people to take their aggression out on other people, so we get more wars. Predicted sequence of events: After Bush destroys life as we know it in this country, people get pissed off, and they start to talk about rebellion. That's where the wealthy media moguls, who back Bush and don't want to lose their power, step in and begin the brainwashing. "Pissed off? Attack another defenseless country! It's their fault you've lost your jobs and your health care, isn't it? That's where your jobs are going...." And so we have pissed off Americans releasing their anger in the WRONG direction. Do you think those people are going to listen to the leftists? What does leftist rhetoric matter when the media can brainwash everyone into thinking in another way? You see, there's a positive feedback loop between Bush and his media mogul friends - he gives them power so that they can give him more power! We’re going to be stuck in a state of permanent warfare for a LOT longer: the more people outside of our country who get pissed off at us, the more attacks we get on our soil, and the more we fight back. How do the leftists win in this situation? Outcome 2.) Let's say that there actually is a rebellion in this country because people are upset at the way health care, jobs, etc. are handled. Who's going to win control after the rebellion? The same gun-toting freaks that back Bush! They have the weapons! No one else does! And what will those people promote more of? Violence! That's right - they LOVE guns, and they probably collect/know how to rig all kinds of things that can go BOOM, as well. THEY will win! How are the leftists, especially the pacifists, supposed to win control in a situation like that? Furthermore, where's the LOGIC in the following statement, folks: Republicans are not much worse than Democrats, so vote for Bush, anyway. Huh? If I had the choice between having a dagger stuck in my heart or getting a minor nick in my flesh, I'd OBVIOUSLY choose the minor nick! Both situations may suck, but one sucks less! This country is balancing on that fine line between 1.) a sane response to Bush’s errors (voting him out of office, since we don’t seem to want to impeach him, which is the most rational move we could make, given his blatant lies) and 2.) a response driven by short-sightedness and/or irrationality (keep Bush in because we want people to realize how much he sucks and revolt OR because we love him for no understandable or intelligent reason). If the left doesn’t push hard enough for a Democratic administration, which will have a foreign policy that actually takes into consideration the plight of other peoples around this world should our country attack them, things WILL get worse. We might even achieve a state of anarchy in this country, but who’s going to win control in the end? Might makes right when there’s no legal protection! And if the Bush administration gets re-elected, I foresee MUCH MORE WAR around the world (it will hit Europe, too, so there’s no escaping there, fellow leftists), regardless of outcome, bringing more misery, poverty, and environmental destruction into this world as well as accelerating the growth of blind hatred and fanaticism to new and more lethal heights. What’s going to happen to the peace movement when THAT happens? We’ll all get shot and killed! We’re not yet that far, and we CAN prevent the current situation from getting worse. I’m tired of seeing Ralph Nader get thrown about like a prop, too. His presence in this race is a good thing, as far as I can see, because he’s got the clout to force the Democrats to listen to the left and address our issues. However, something smells rotten about the way things are going thus far. I sincerely believe that in some Republican think tank somewhere, the Neocons slimily decided to infiltrate our ranks and set leftist against leftist. Does the left realize that they’ve been intentionally divided into factions and set against each other, using Nader as but one vehicle to do so? Let’s use Nader to our benefit, instead and agree with Nader on the issues! That doesn’t mean that we have to vote for him, but it will keep the Democrats from going too far to the right. And if we find ourselves agreeing with each other and building more ties between each other, we’ll have defeated the Republican strategists! We’ll have some clout with the Democrats! We’ll prevent more violence between us and send a message of peace and understanding out to the rest of the world! We can be an example! Let’s stop bickering! --------------------- |
