Oh, the above article was taken from The Lancet of the same volume-issue-date as this article. I'm going to post the editorial next, as well as the newspaper article that cited these articles. ----------------------------------- Talking points The Lancet Volume 364, Number 9435 21 August 2004 The legacy of Abu Ghraib 'An inquiry into the behaviour of medical personnel in places such as Abu Ghraib could lead to valuable reforms within military medicine' The complicity of US military medical personnel during abuses of detainees is of great importance to human rights, medical ethics, and military medicine. In a Health and Human Rights article, Steven H Miles discusses the distinction the US government has made between cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment, which is permitted in US military detention centres, and torture. Reported abuses include beatings, shocks, asphyxia, sexual humiliation, and exposure to cold, heat, and loud noise. Miles also discusses the role that medical professionals played in Abu Ghraib, and whether they reviewed, challenged, or tempered the policies of the military. He concludes that comprehensive investigations are needed, and that if results from these investigations are reviewed with regard to international law, medical ethics, and standards for the treatment of detainees, the legacy of Abu Ghraib could yet be a valuable one. In an Editorial, The Lancet looks at the problem of dual loyalty of military dctors, and calls for health-workers to break their silence--"Those who are involved in or have witnessed ill-treatment need to give a full and accurate account of events at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo bay." --------------------- |
