You may have been told about the birds and the bees when you were younger but it's unlikely mum and dad ever told you about the elephants, monkeys, goats and guinea pigs, and exactly what they get up to. Because, contrary to what many people think, it seems group sex, gay sex and lesbian sex is very common among our furry friends.

And, to demonstrate just how common, Artis Zoo in Amsterdam is organising a series of lectures and tours to show off its homo- and bisexual beasts. "The idea behind it is to show that homosexuality is a natural phenomenon," says zoo Director, Dr Maarten Frankenhuis.

"We are sure one female is lesbian."

Dominant
Although no definite research has been done on the subject, homosexuality has been observed, in both zoos and in the wild, among many species including dolphins, gorillas, orang-utans, chimpanzees and elephants. The reasons, Dr Frankenhuis says, are unclear but it often involves younger, immature animals.

"For example, young goats will jump on each other, mainly because the dominant adult male monopolises the females. So in one way or another they have to do something with their sexuality. But this is usually temporary, as soon as they become adults and manage to become the dominant male in the group, they will then mate with females exclusively."

Power
It may also, as in many of the primate species says Dr Frankenhuis, be simply part of their fight for a place in the hierarchy. "When you introduce a new animal, the others will jump on it just to show who's boss. Adapted from our programme, Dutch Horizons.

This is purely a power game. As soon as the hierarchy is established they will continue to be heterosexual."

But whatever the reasons, it seems, within the community, these animals are treated exactly as the same as others. "There is absolutely no rejection of homosexual companions like you often find with humans," explains Dr Frankenhuis. "For animals it's much easier, of course, they only have to listen to the bible of nature."

Redheads

"Flamingos usually perform group sex."

The animals may be forgiving but what do the humans make of it? Are they considered weird or strange? Or freaks of nature even? "Not by biologists," says the doctor, "but possibly by very religious people. It was a real shock to many when homosexuality in animals was first written about. It was always thought it didn't occur. They had the idea it was unnatural. But many visitors here are surprised, they suddenly realise that it is natural. They realise that they themselves, or their sons or daughters are not strange at all, they just belong to a minority. Like people with red hair, they belong to a minority. And, of course, there's nothing wrong with red hair."
