Thinking about the upcoming election....

A woman I saw on a news program this past Friday said something along the lines of this: the American public can vote in around 500 representatives for itself at the national level; the president can appoint/nominate around 7,000 national public officials, all on the public payroll at the federal level. I suppose that 7,000 includes ambassadorships, cabinet members, supreme court judges.... Now, if she's correct, there's a HUGE imbalance there. Imagine the changes that take place in the people who represent those of us in the States every time we elect an new president.

I know people are saying there's no difference between the two parties, and I see very little difference, myself. Both parties have their corporate sponsors. But for some reason, I just don't see Democrats pushing for new wars in and/or invasions of other countries *as much*.... Bush and the Republicans who back him are in the war business, not just the oil business. They want to keep up the "wars" so they can squeeze all the money that they can out of a business enterprise that is pretty much outdated and would be useless if we didn't keep creating all those enemies. Sometimes I wonder if the Republican-dominated corporate media is responsible for perpetuating the idea that there's no difference between the two parties.... Even if a Democrat can't do much in office, it really is a huge difference for those people who are in the ever expanding sights of the military-industrial complex. Maybe a few thousand lives will be spared and a few archaeological sites won't be accidentally bombed because we have a different president with a slightly different foreign policy?

I voted for Nader last time, knowing Gore would win (and he did, but he wasn't allowed into office). This time, I am going to vote for Kerry and Edwards. Like I said before: I love Nader, but I hate Bush even more.
