VIDEO ON CHALDEAN COMMUNITY AIRS OCTOBER 9 ON CHANNEL 4

A new video depicting Metro Detroit’s Chaldean community will air at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 9, on WDIV Channel 4.

Our Story – Chaldeans in Detroit is a half-hour program produced by Mort Crim Communications that includes vintage still photographs mixed with contemporary interviews.

Among the notable Chaldean community members featured are Mar (Bishop) Ibrahim Ibrahim; Michael George, founder of Melody Farms; Joseph Nadhir, who strives to keep Chaldean culture alive; World War II veteran Peter Essa, whose war letters home have received national recognition; and 48th District Court Judge Diane Dickow D’Agostini. The video also includes footage from a recent Chaldean wedding and information on the upcoming Chaldean Community Cultural Center (CCCC).

The CCCC, currently under construction in West Bloomfield, will feature interactive exhibits on Chaldean culture, which traces its rooms back 5,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. The video will have a permanent home at the CCCC, where it will be shown on a continuous loop. The goal is to give guests of the center an opportunity to hear firsthand about the community’s migration to the United States, community values and the route taken to live the American dream, and to give Chaldeans a sense of pride about their community and its many accomplishments.

“We hope to show a broad overview of the Chaldean community with people telling their stories of how their families ended up in Detroit,” said John Owens, the video’s producer. “You really get an idea of what the community is about – where they came from, their beliefs and values.”

Metro Detroit is home to some 120,000 Chaldeans – Aramaic-speaking Catholics from Iraq. The dynamic ethnic group has strong family ties and a keen sense of entrepreneurship. In fact, two out of every three Chaldean families in the area own their own businesses.
