I just bought, a couple of weeks ago, Mike Oldfield's "The Songs of Distant Earth" which is meant as a sort of thematic accompaniment to the book of the same title by Arthur C. Clark. Oh my god, the album is *gorgeous.* It helped me to fall in love with it to listen to its entirety for the first time on a long car drive through the mountains at sunset, mist cutting the view in half occassionally, gracefully lingering along the vast fields in the valleys like a fine lace.... Oh my god. This album has inspired me to read the book.... Anyway, the album is new-age, mostly instrumental, and not comparable to classical music greats, but all around beautiful and definitely one thousand times better than any pop song. The songs "Let There Be Light," "Supernova," "Hibernaculum," "Tubular World," "Ascension," and "A New Beginning" are the best, in my opinion. Sigh.... --------------------- |
