the story of Gilgamesh transcends the sillies. While it pays homage to the creation myths that all people back then felt they needed to make sense of their world and answer those big stupid questions with...and which we've sort of kept intact...at least the Jewish version...which I don't think any sane person actually believes...what is so fascinating about Gilgamesh is that he starts out where the rest all end...he WANTS immortality...he goes SEEKING immortality, which in one way or another is at the core of Christian belief..that if you "seek" out Jesus...you will stumble onto Paradise...after your own personal travails and journey etc.

But it goes farther with Gilgamesh..he sort of comes back from the other side to tell us "forget it". He does after all find the end of the earth..he meets an immortal...he is given the chance to be one with the gods, but fails from a delightful fit of very human sleepiness...what could be more natural, doesn't matter the "heaven" he was seeking, whether a spaceship brought it or it blew out of yahwe's asre..point is it isn't for Humans...period...

Gilgamesh lives anew on THIS earth...he is even sort of reborn into a much wiser, gentler, responsible and caring human...what more could any civilized world want? These fanciful quests for one god and ONLY one one god and the list of rules you have to play by which, just incidentally, seem to coincide perfectly with what Caesar demands anyway...and the pope...this is all Human nonsense,,,and Gilgamesh realizes that...he discovers the real secret of our Humanity..that we had best concentrate on being the best damn human beans we can be on THIS earth, in THIS lifetime...and you can see from Bush's Christian example, the REAL uses of this Pradise and eternal Life crap....for in quest of the divine, Humans forgive themselves for EVERY conceivable crime...something Gilgamesh stopped doing when he came home to be a good person.

Yes...Siduri is a haunting presence...a portrait of her???
