..it`s fascinating to contemplate Rome`s conversion to Christ. On the surface of it it`s ridiculous...which is why people insist it happend and is a miracle to boot.

A religion adopted by a pagan Empire..replacing its own...a religion that came from an occupied hellhole of the Empire..from a People who never managed to build a toilet...who`s greatest moments came when they were enslaved and taught by others...THESE people had the magic secret to God...they were on the inside track all along while Rome, Greece, Persia, Assyria and China too were all wrong...come on..get real!

To step aside and look at the thing disapassionately you realize that the Jews NEEDED to believe in a Messiah...for obvious reasons...and they developed it to a fever pitch the more Rome rubbed their noses in their own hapless ineptitude. Had Rome never conquered or ruled Judea, it`s doubtful there would have been the bumper crop of Messiahs in those years. Let`s say the Jews managed to build a house right..that they managed to find a more promising place to live and thrive on earth...let`s go all the way and assume they managed to build something close to Nineveh...think they would have yearned for a Messiah..or needed one?

So, in this corner of the Empire a small, subjugated and humiliated, once again, population produces a mythology and then a theology about some Rescuer coming to help them kick ass and lord it over someone else for a change. The Empire notices this...notices that Jesus is advocating and preaching patience...submission, fatalism...acceptance..that he is eschewing violence, rebellion, that he insists you pay your taxes and for the most part behave the part of a willing subject. All of this is music to Rome`s ears...and after killing him, Rome WOULD enshrine this "religion".

But Jesus had to be kicked upstairs first..he had to be made divine..not just someone giving sound advice...and so Jesus became the son of God..or God hisself...which was nothing new in Rome...there the emperors were being made gods regularly. Jesus HAD to be a god and he HAD to be murdered..."sacrificed" if you prefer...and then of course he rose from the dead..just to make sure you got the point..and is off somewhere waiting for Roman citizens to do their duty by their emperor...who soon enough would become a pope/emperor.

Rome wasn`t "converted" by the religion and morals of Jesus...BULLSHIT!! Rome used Jesus, converted HIM... used this novel approach to justifying slavery and occupation and robbing of the people of other lands....something Rome never stopped doing but would increase the take under the pope to the point where they owned more land with less effort than their armies EVER won for them.

There is no "miracle" to Rome`s adopting this religion...not a frggin emperor believed in it and not a damn thing changed...Jesus did nothing to ameliorate the rapacity and cruelty and business of Rome...on the contrary, he was used to make it even MORE powerful..so much more so that they branched out in the east, in Byzantium, where they were able to rule for another 1000 years..and rob and rape with abandon...

THAT is the "miracle" of Jesus...that, while preaching love and the rest of it...what he really did was provide a system whereby authorities could control and direct people better...AND keep them blindsided with visions of a day to come..a day when THEY would get to sit in the emperors chair.

Turns out the Emperor`s New Clothes...are the pope`s.
