Dear Ken,

This might come as a bit of a shock for you and some of the others on this mailing list but our leadership in Iraq is attempting to protect our people in Iraq.

The Americans are trying to use every tactic they can to ensure that they remain in Iraq for as long as possible. Our leadership alreadys suspects that it is the CIA who is paying for fundamentalist Muslims to bomb our churches and the Shiite mosques. This is being done in order to scare our people into supporting the Americans and the continued illegal occupation of Iraq.

This was the same tactic used by the British in 1933 when they told our levies to initiate an uprising promising them air support and a "safe haven," when all was said and done. Our levies foolishly followed the British and attacked the Iraqi army at Fish Khabour which led to the Simele massacre of 800 men, women and children. The only British aerial support provided was in the shape of reconnasaince aircraft used to take photos of the massacre which were presented to the League of Nations in 1934 extending the British mandate in Iraq for another decade!

Fortunately our leadership in Iraq has learnt from the mistakes of our fathers and will not support the creation of a state or separation as proposed by the AUA sitting comfortably in the West. Our people in Iraq must do everything they can to ensure that they remain loyal to Iraq and are neutral when it comes to supporting this illegal invasion.

This will help explain why the ADM did not support the calls for a safe haven and why they insist on using Iraqi flags during their demonstrations.

The Americans are only interesetd in their bottom line. They could care less for our people. Our job should be to support our people in Iraq and ensure that they are not used as a willing tool by US foriegn policy as we were in 1933.

So yes we should not deny for others what we demand for ourselves. We should demand the human rights and dignity of all Iraqis and ensure that we as Assyrians remain a legacy and not a liabilty to Iraq during this turbulent period.

It is not just overseas. Immediately after the fall of Baghdad I organized a group of our young people to do a demonstration in front of the Palestine Hotel in downtown Baghdad.

At that time it was the headquarters of the US and every group in Iraq was staging a demonstration.

We made a huge poster which said "Independence For Assyria". All the other groups were saying similar things.

We got ready to go down and the "powers that be" in the Assyrian Community stopped us.

"You cant say that!" they said.

I hadnt learned yet how totally lacking in courage the leadership was so asked why.

"We cant ask for that now - the time will come . . ."

So we went back and made another sign which said "Protect The Rights Of The Assyrian Christians."

We went back to get the young people to take them down.

Again - "You cant say that"~

"What, I said? What in the world is wrong with that???

"You need to say "Protect The Rights Of All Iraqis"

Disgusted at the lack of courage just days following the fall of Baghdad it was my first experience with "wimps".

We took the kids down and did the demonstration with both posters much to the anger of the "powers that be"!

I ask you, would you stand all day in the hot sun with a poster that said "Protect The Rights of All Iraqis?|"

Well, it seems like they are still doing it!

Want to motivate people and start a movement? That is the way NOT to!

At least I had the joy of having many of the people come and looking both ways say "You are right'!!!
