...just got back from a long drive. It's nearly 5 hours from Chicago to my house, but even though I made this drive twice in a 48 hour period, it was well worth it. Why, you might ask, is it well worth it? Besides getting to visit with some very genuine friends, I had the good fortune of seeing "Poetic Emancipation", which was the real purpose of the trip. This movie was about as "Assyrian" as you could possibly get, and I mean that in the Atouraya Khata definition of the word: Assyria(n) as a verb, as something positive, something to be proud of and not ashamed of. Each aspect of the film was almost entirely created by Assyrians, from the directing to the producing, from the acting to the sound tracks! Although I'm no film expert, the idea behind the film seemed rather unique to me, not only the idea itself, but the way it was presented through cinematography. There were some interesting techniques used in that film that were very interesting to say the least. I only hope that it will be seen by a wider audience in the future...and by "wider", I mean "an audience outside our community". The only cons I can offer are the same ones that I shared with those who made the film: the subtitles had a few minor problems (which are going to be fixed), and there were a few short sections where it was difficult to make out what was being said (the sound quality was not perfect). Obviously the pros outweigh the cons by about 1000 to 1. If you read this - and you know who you are - THANK YOU for creating this film! --------------------- |
