Camper's Log - November 3, 2004 Dear Fans, I hate politics. It feels less like working together for the common good and more like fighting for your rights. As I don't deal well with continued anger, I decided to come up with a constructive solution. I'm outlining a plan to fix America. Here are some entry-level thoughts. 1. Give them what they want. - The republican party has moved so far to the right that they have done an excellent job at erasing the line between church and state. - So let's help them go all the way. Let's help make the bible law in certain counties by getting ballot measures passed that enact inane biblical laws, such as stoning for adultery. Then the courts will repeal the laws and set precedents against the merger of church and state. 2. Expose the hypocrites. - The republicans are now locked into biblical code as a lifestyle choice. It's a hard thing to live up to. Senator Jack Ryan's career was destroyed when it was revealed that he had kinky sex with his own wife. The republicans don't stand for that. So let's continue to make them abide by their own policies. - Continue to out gay staff of anti-gay politicians, and adulterous married politicians. - Anyone who claims that the bible is the literal word of god should be outed for not following it to the letter. The bible clearly states that shelfish is an abomination and should not be eaten. Let's photograph people at seafood restaurants with a mouthful of clams next to the biblical quote and the quote where they say they follow the bible. Call it the SINNER campaign. The shellfish rule is just one of probably hundreds of impossibly retarded laws in the bible. 3. Create a true liberal elite. - This partisan-free organization can act as a new "good ole' boys" network to support our own, as a combination of a networking organization and an alternative political organization. It can also provide a safety net for rebels. Example: the waiter at the seafood restaurant who calls the press or snaps the picture to expose Senator Bible Verbatim might get fired for his actions, but he could be rewarded with another, perhaps better job from a restaurant owner in the network. We must reward whistleblowers. This organization could easily be an extension of the ACLU or MoveOn.org. It would need huge numbers of members to be effective, with vocal, wealthy, non-aggro leaders. (Sorry, Nader!) We do not need to sit back and criticize. We need to be seen as an effective educated group- helping people left helpless by the Bush administration's policies. Then we need to advertise the results, such as, "Children left behind by the Bush administration: 1225423422232. Children tutored through our non-profit, non-partisan organization: 132,343. Help us continue to take up the slack." - This organization of power players, when large enough, could act as an independent, intellectual representative of the United States to foreign countries. When foreign heads of state choose to meet with and speak to the organization rather than the central government, it will be a vote of no confidence in the government, but a vote of confidence for the enlightened people of the US. Perhaps we can regain some international goodwill this way. - Threaten to keep it to ourselves. California passed an initiative to sponsor stem-cell research only because the US government under the current administration suppresses it. The citizens of California will shoulder the burden for this in taxes. Therefore, any patents or treatments that come out of this research should be granted to California citizens only. (This would probably not stand up in court when we try to enact it, and that's fine- the goal isn't to deny people health care.) The courts would side against the president and the republicans in a very public way, and expose them as suppressors of both humanitarian science and medicine. This example can be expanded to other social and scientific initiatives in other states. - Education is inherently anti-fundamentalist. If we go out of our way to help out in schools, in after-school programs, and by tutoring, we can make up the gap between what the Bush administration wants to be taught in schools and what really is. - Churches are tax- exempt organizations that now preach partisan politics (on either side) to further their own pet issues within the government in a glorious circle-jerk. Well, then, so can be science and education and non-profit community service organizations. Many of these are inherently non-republican, but not officially. We don't need them to support the democrats, who are mired in party politics just as deeply as the republicans, but these groups are more likely to work with an independent organization like the one outlined above. These groups do just as much good as any church, usually without spreading hatred at the same time. We should encourage our own organizations to be more politically active. For the short term, I joined the ACLU today. In the longer term, I guess I'm going to have to do more. It's up to me to fix America. Fans, are you with me?
