...am readeing a huge biography of William Randolph Hearst, the media magnate whose newspapers and opinions reached twenty million Americans a day around the time of Roosevelt's first term of office...it's hard to grasp how much influence this one man had..he and the forty or so men in the United States at that time who made one million dollars a year as reported income...and who shaped America for all purposes up through the last decade.... Hearst's war against Communism...his flaming editorials, set the stage for the next 30 years of American and un-American activity in this country. The guy was a genius in many respects and for a time the champion of the little guy...till the little guy got tired of being stepped on and unionized and engaged in collective bargaining...the Hearst papers then went after every labor advocate as if he was on orders from Stalin as well as attacking colleges and professors and student who were at all "progressive", which could often mean simply teaching Russian history...mostly to protect his own wealth and freedom of power but also because he believed the spread of what he called Communism would lead to a Fascist backlash in America...when it was unrestrained Capitalism that was causing the labor unrest and calls for more equitable distribution of wealth. To his credit he always condemned anti-Jewish feelings. Hearst eventually won his case...America ate itself alive in it's un-American madness and the gap between rich and poor...after a brief middle class interlude made possible by strong unions, is growing once again...and also growing once again is ethnic and religious hatred, this time against Muslims. The newspapers are at it again...and so is the government they support...this time Terrorism will replace Communism and we'll be in for another few decades of blight and war and economic turmoil...and people will once again be labled un-American or not REAL American if they don't fall into lock-step..which used to be THE un-American thing you could do at one time..but now marks you out as a true son and daughter of Thomas Paine. The Middle Class made America and saved it too...the wealthy and especially the obscenely wealthy of today save only themselves. --------------------- |
