Just finished watching Ridley Scot's Kingdom of heaven starring Olando Bloom. And despite the hollywood cliched hero holding off the entire Saracen army with his rusty pocket knife the historical aspect of the movie was unmistakeable. The hero of the movie is none other than the magnificent Saladin. Saladin is a Kurd born in Tikrit. Tikrit is of course an ancient Assyrian city that translated to 'trade.' Saladin stands directing his army of which one third was Christian Assyrian. He beseiges Jerusalem using siege engines and catapults. The similarities between Saladin and his ancient Assyrian and babylonian precursors is startling. The blood thirsty crusaders are shown up for the opportunistic and barbaric murderers and thieves they were. The comparison between them and their ancestors is also telling. When all is said and done Jerusalem is captured by Saladin who allows the blood thirsty crusaders to return to Europe unlike the treatment they meted out to the Muslims when they originally captured jerusalem during the first crusade. The final scene ends with Saladin entering Jerusalem and lifting up and a turned over Christian cross from where it has fallen. --------------------- |
