To the Age newspaper, I just wanted thank John Howard and the Liberal government’s unprecedented and generous aid package of 1 billion Australian dollars to help in the rebuilding of our Asian neighbours affected by the Tsunami disaster. It however strikes me as the “Mother of all Ironies,” that on this hand we can be so financially generous and open-hearted to the poor people in Asia while we have all but ignored the innocents killed, wounded, made refugees and homeless in current day Iraq. The natural tragedy that took 10 minutes to kill up to 150,000 innocent, mostly children, civilians in South East Asia parallels the US and Australian instigated tragedy that has taken over 12 years and 2 wars to kill up to 600,000 innocent Iraqi civilians. The costs of the Australian Multi-National Interception Force (MNIF) was $349 million for two years. The MNIF was the force which helped impose the sanctions which killed over half a million Iraqi children and the cost of the war against Iraq is over $700 million, in addition to the normal costs of running the ADF, and has resulted in the deaths of an additional 15,000 innocent civilians. The total cost of ten years of Iraqi sanctions and months of war is well over $1 billion. As Australians we have shown that we are generous and genuinely care about the victims of natural tragedies. Should we not also show the same care and generosity in dealing with the victims of our blind support for US hegemony? Regards, David Chibo --------------------- |
