...what do people think democracy is anyway? Is it magic? Take 100 people, 60 of whom are savage, brutal and inhumane...and see what kind of "democracy" you have. All democracy means, as a political system, is majority rule. There isn't anything in it that tells you...or guarantees you what KIND of people that majority will be. ...America is basically Europe transplanted..a Europe that learned the hard way to put religion in a muzzle...take it out of politics...a Europe that fought its way out from the clutches of the Church...and its Inquisition and countless bloody purges..a Europe that had a Renaissance...an Enlightment and an Age of Reason...these things helped shape the kind of PEOPLE we would be...in this democracy. If we now decide to dumb ourselves to oblivion we shouldn't be surprised if our democracy becomes merely a tyranny of the majority. I hear if Alawi fails the test America is resolved to bring in someone stronger who can whip Iraq into shape...like Saddam maybe. ...who killed more Iraqis faster...Saddam or Bush? --------------------- |
