Does it still spark that kind of interest in you or is he just a typical "queer, and a recovering alcoholic/addict"? ..it is not a "bit". ...the Assyrian part only adds to the rest...and he is NOT typical...not in his style of writing and the images he evokes...but you have to remember to follow him through his own progression and growth and the development of his identity and writing ability. ...there is nothing typical about him or his writing. One of the things we Assyrians suffer from, among a whole host of ailments, is this thing about being PRIVATE...of not letting anything show because what will the neighbors in the next tree say about us. How can you have any kind of writing at all..or art for that matter, or culture, if everyone is scared shitless of what the next person will think and say about us and our parents? ..people have told me that my writing on these subjects as well as my style has made it easier for them to say what has been on their minds..that I went so far out there to the extreme, that they can sneak in their comments, which otherwise would have been seen as too radical and weird...I made it possible for even Eden Naby to be more pro-active...hell she even got SUED and for the same amount I did and by an incomprably bigger ass than Jackie Bejan is...in the same way Emil has dared to push, no, to BLOW the envelope wide open...this will make it easier for others of us to express ourselves...because Emil opened this thing up so wide...the rest of us can sneak out and breath some fresh air. How can we produce a Conrad...a Dickens, a Henry Miller or any kind of playwright or poet? All we have are people who weep for Nineveh and whine about what they suffered like it`s something only they endured. Besides, it is no small thing to be Queer and proud of it. That alone is an accomplishment of monumental proportions. As Emil writes, what`s the big fucking deal with your high school quarterback being BRAVE? Where`s the risk to him...where`re the sleepless nights..the fear every time he walks home...the fear of abandonement by family and friends, the lonliness...what if quarterbacks were seen as deviants and sickos for playing football...how many of them would "come out" and admit it? It`s one thing for Errol Flynn to write about all the women he fucked...or Henry Miller...these people are bragging to the choir...people EXPECT them to have done these things...it`s only mildly shocking that they would be so bold as to admit it. But for Emil to do the same takes on a whole world of meaning...it is far more a political battle than a list of sexual escapades...he is taking on god, the bible, the LAW and any number of taboos...he is risking not only the censure of his own family but the knowledge that he is holding them all up to hurt and pain such as they would NEVER suffer if he was Braf Pitt talking about his babes. On top of which, he is risking his very life. 99.9% of men would love to do what Emil has done...to WOMEN! They`d love to have an attractive woman they don`t know and will never have to see again, buy flowers for or tell her that they "love her", drive by and pick them up... go to a secluded spot and "feed my penis" to her and be done with it. Maybe we`re all just jealous? Emil is forcing us to come to grips with a caveman mentality we`ve kept a tight grip on for 2000 plus years...the same mentality that burned witches, scorned and enslaved women and was barbarous in even it`s own day...yet we try to keep our minds..our beautiful minds, locked in that moth eaten box...Emil is breaking that box, whether he knows it or means to...and that he`s Assyrians MAKES the point that much stronger..that we too can be at the forfront of a movement for the liberation of Humanity, like we USED to be and not just running behind with the poop scooper at the parade. > >If that made any sense please answer... if not, please continue with this Shushan chick you've been writing about. ...Shushan is a delight...ain`t she? --------------------- |
