Carson, Coburn duke it out over 'evil' By Adam Bednar, CDC News Editor The senate race between Congressman Brad Carson and Dr. Tom Coburn has ratcheted up the nasty factor now that a high-ranking Republican operative described Carson as "evil." During Monday's debate Coburn said that the senate race is a battle of cultures, a struggle of good versus evil. Speaking to Oklahoma's delegates to the Republican National Convention, the political director of the republican national senatorial campaign committee, said, "We also view this as an issue of good versus evil." "These kind of nutty, extremist comments only further lead to the polarization of our democracy. This isn't a political jihad, this is an election," Carson said. Kristopher Eisenla, a spokesperson for the Carson campaign, said the campaign was alerted to Davis's statements by reports from the Tulsa World and Daily Oklahoman Aaron Cooper, Coburn's campaign spokesperson, said the congressman is using the statements out of context. "Dr. Coburn sees the issues facing the country as good and evil. Everyone in the room during the debate new that was the case," Cooper said. Carson said he is deeply offended by the attacks from the Coburn campaign and national Republican leadership. He said laying a label of evil on a Christian and family man is "disgusting." "I've been called a lot of things in my political life-no one has ever referred to me as 'evil,'" Carson said. Cooper said Coburn never intended to imply a good versus evil comparison between he and Carson. He said the doctor sees many things going on in the country as good and evil and that's why he felt compelled to leave his medical practice and run. Carson said the fight to build better roads in Oklahoma and fighting for people's rights isn't a matter of good versus evil. Carson said he wants too run a campaign the state can be proud of. "Tom Coburn and his buddies should be ashamed. This type of rhetoric embarrasses the state of Oklahoma," Carson said. --------------------- |
