..it's absurd to imagine the Assyrian Empire could have lasted indefinitely. As it was it had an excellent run...and provided the basis for so much that came after...the Assyrians laid foundations without which there would have been no Newton or Einstein, to name a very few. And the end of empire wasn't the end of the people or their genetic structure, both good and rotten. The Assyrians went right on mixing and matching as they had always done...till the first of the murderously intolerant Jew religions came along...Judiasm never posed a direct threat, they had not the power or inclination. It was the Christians who first infested the land and we can see what kinds of theiving, evangelizing pains in the ass they are today. Some few may have converted...probably married into them,,,,but there was never any mass exodus into Christ...the majority of Christians being merely the first Jewish converts thrown out by Rome...seems Christ always got people moving. The Assyrians were no doubt dispirited and tired too...they'd done their best, given their all and needed to rest...and rest they did for awhile, on their knees. Then Islam came like a hot desert wind...like Sargon and Hammurabi had come from the desert with their bold, energetic youth and idealism and they too created excitement and pointed the way to bright future, on THIS earth. Nothing essentially Assyrian died out....that entire region, to this day, is filled with the echoes and the tangible deeds of those who started out their lives in historic time as Assyrians. It matters only slightly which clothes they wear, what they eat and which gods they pray to...these were never the things that made Assyrians what they were....what matters is the quality of mind and heart...that's what made the Assyrians THE Assyrians. That spirit is alive and well in Iraq today where, against the most hopeless odds, the spirit of Assyria shines through the Iraqi Freedom Fighters as they defend the land of Ashur from the illegal war and inhumane attack of the Western Christians...with, this time, the active encouragement and prayers of the Christian dogs we bred among us. Nothing separates these people from the Assyrians more than this one act....selling BetNahrain out to Christ yet again... But Ashur is merciful...those churches are gone. --------------------- |
