Dear Friend, I thought you might be interested in this Human Rights Campaign e-activism campaign. If you go to the URL below you can check out what is at stake and send your own message directly to the relevant decision makers. Here's what I said: "Your one-hour 20/20 show that purported to explore the motives in the murder of Matthew Shepard did not meet the standards people have come to expect from 20/20 and ABC News. You did not put forth a single piece of solid evidence to back your assertion that drugs were the central cause of Matthew Shepard's murder You relied on a collection of interviews by sources lacking in credibility, and you ignored critical facts and sources as you attempted to advance your revisionist claim that anti-gay bias played no role in the murder. Please meet with GLAAD and the Matthew Shepard Foundation with the goal of offering viewers a more thorough and accurate examination of the evidence that led America to understand that anti-gay bias played a central role in the murder of Matthew Shepard. Provide an opportunity for credible spokespeople to take the facts in this case to your viewers. Throughout your segment, you contrast the words "mythology" and "truth", "legend" and "fact." There are indeed facts in this case, and the messengers of those facts are credible experts backed by recorded confessions and public records. You deliberately chose to turn a blind eye to these facts, and in so doing misled your viewers. This was not only irresponsible but also malicious and discriminatory. Please meet with GLAAD and Judy Shepard, and give your viewers the opportunity to hear the facts surrounding the murder of Matthew Shepard". ************************************** In response to a posting on an ABC website I said: "Dont' be so dissappointed. The corporate media giants are just rewarding the many people who hate or fear gays (and lesbians) for having supported the corporate media's candidate for president. I beleive that the piece revisiting the Matthew Shepherd case was much more than just irresponsible. I beleive that it was a carefully timed, willful, insidious, deliberate and maliciously intentional attack by the corporate media on the gay and lesbian community as a whole. I see it as an effort to discredit the gay and lesbian community's need for protection against hate crimes, to deny the fact that the gay and lesbian community is still the frequent target and victim of all sorts of discrimination, and to facilitate the gradual erosion of the many gains the U.S. gay and lesbian community has achieved over the last 3-4 decades. It is also a prime example of the false "sacredness" assigned to race/ethnicity as opposed to sexual orientation when it comes to the issues of discrimination and civil rights. Had the case involved the black victim of white/anglos it would never have been revisited or revised the way the Matthew Shepherd case was in the 20/20 piece". http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/campaign/2020_response?rk=s7zTOgS1pjYFW *********************************** Powered by GetActive Software, Inc.
