...early morning here at the beach. Got a cup of coffee and sat down in a deck chair left out the night before...watched the orange sun come up over a palm grove...Iīve rented a studio space here...set back from the main street just across the beachfront...above a Mexican laundry. Two rooms and a bath..no kitchen...good light in one room...thatīs the studio. Itīs small but big enough. On my way back in just now Ias struck again of how much trouble someone went to in designing different manhole covers in this town. No two are alike..there are five pointed stars...concentric rings and other geometric patterns and slashes...it reminded me of my Jewish sculptor friend who visited here on my advice several years back. He returned from his vacation with one of these manhole covers and has it in his studio now on a fancy stand... While he was here he found one manhole cover more worthy than the others..it had a Star of David pattern on it as plain as day. Who knows how long it was in place...outside a restaurant thatīs still here? Who knows how much sewage has flown underneath it..how much good shit, or many people have spit on it as they walked by for all these decades past...how many dogs have relieved themselves there..how many people vomited their nightīs revels? But it had a Jewish emblem on it and that made it dear and special...so my friend had to have it. He contacted the responsible officials...bought them a new cover and paid two stalwart souls to pry the old one loose...which they did with masks on and heavy rubber gloves. He had them pour muriatic acid all over it and soaked it in bleach for a few days...later, back in Berkeley, he heated it several times with a blowtorch just to make sure the thing was clean...donīt know how he described it to Customs...but maybe on some level he was just removing it because it was a slight on his national symbol...though after he put a patina on it and waxed it up..and had a wooden stand made for it..it looked very impressive...definitely a work of Art, like an ancient shield... But...what made it different from any hundred other manhole covers in any other city in the world? Obviously it was the Jewish synbol that gave a shithole cover value and meaning. People have offered to buy it...especially when they hear the story but he wonīt sell it...heīs proud of it..proud he was able to rescue his national symbol and turn it into a thing of beauty..a piece of Art...his pride in it and in what HE was able to do to uplift and transform it is evident. And after 15 years the only statue ever made of our most famous Queen Shumirum still sits face down in a parking lot in Monterey...as if she was worth shit. --------------------- |
