Will Durant says that one of the greatest mysteries of all time is why the Romans became Christians. I think the answer depends on how you understand the question. It's only a mystery if you believe they became Christian at all...what really happened is that Christians became Romans in order to thrive.

Another mystery is what happened to Islam...once the most progressive force on earth. It was Muslim Baghdad that took over from where Babylon left off to become the most advanced city of its day. It was Islam that had hospitals and universities and observatories...it was Islam that saw the value in Greek and Classical learning, saving it for the world and an eventually enlightened Europe.

What happened to them? How did such a glorious and inspirational system become so dilapidated and shopworn? It seems Islam never recovered from the material damage and demoralization of the Mongol Conquest in 1299 when Baghdad and several other Muslim centers of advanced learning and living were irreperably damaged. Looking at the mood of Christians after 9/11 you can sort of get a hint. What happened to Islam at the hands of the Mongols was far worse than 9/11...but even in our case you saw religious extremists use the attack as a sign and warning that god was displeased...and since then there's been a rush on to go back to religious basics...to obey literally that damfool book. Was it Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell who blurted out that 9/11 was god's vengeance on us for our wicked MTV ways and we should all heed the call and get real stupid and fundamental in order to save ourselves...which isn't that far from their belief that homosexuality is the disease, for which AIDS is a cure.

I can just imagine the conservative Imams, outraged for decades at the laxity of Muslim morals as scholars read "pagan" literature, wrote hot love poems and painted gorgeous miniatures...defying the letter of Muslim law. Then came the Mongols and like every other pinched parson the world over they declared this was God's justice used to bring the righteous back into the fold and scared and cowed the general populace into dumb obedience.

The conservatives managed to get a stranglehold on Islam from that time till today...and we...we dumb clucks are happily going down the same road...heading into church for our protection when it's these damn churches and their idiot-making machinery that brought us here more than anything.

Starting children out in life by filling their heads with celestial twaddle is no way to make a sane culture. Look around you.
