WASHINGTON - At least 22 people were killed and 50 wounded Tuesday in a lunchtime attack at a U.S. and Iraqi base near Mosul in Iraq (news - web sites), a Pentagon (news - web sites) official said. Some of the dead were said to be Americans.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said unknown assailants used rockets and mortars to attack a U.S. and Iraqi forward operating base in Mosul. A radical Muslim group later claimed responsibility.


The attack occurred at lunchtime in a large mess tent crowded with soldiers, according to Jeremy Redmon, a reporter for the Richmond, Va., Times-Dispatch embedded with troops in Mosul. He said the force of the explosions knocked soldiers off their feet and out of their seats.


Redmon reported that members of the Richmond-based 276th Engineer Battalion were among hundreds who had just sat down for lunch in the giant tent.


He said Americans were among the dead, but the Pentagon official could not confirm whether the casualties were U.S. or Iraqi personnel. The base is used jointly by the United States and Iraq.
