...interesting show on economic development...this year China will graduate 300,000 engineers and scientists...India about the same...the United States...70,000. anything that can be done in front of a computer and telephone can be done anywhere in the world...for a lot less than it can in America...program designers who get paid $100,000 a year and more here, who were the darlings of the latte boom...can be easily replaced, with just as much quality and efficiency, in India for one tenth that cost...it is no longer factory hands that can be found cheaper elsewhere but PhDs as well. And, where foreign students still come to America for advanced degrees, they no longer come in the numbers they used to..but most alarming, more and more of them go back home to put their skills to work...and since we've not yet found a way to make life in India hell..it seems Indians aren't yearning to "come to the land of the free". That's been a nasty little secret of American economics...South and Central America have been sources of cheap labor for decades for this country...holding up the very base of our properity....and not a damn one of them came her without great duress and reluctance...most of them driven here by the backlash of the policies of the same dictators we installed in their countries who systematicaly robbed the people for our benefit. If our cabinets come from China and our food from Mexico and if now our high tech gets farmed out...reducing us all to flipping burgers at Wal-Mart...then Lenin's prediction begins to come true...American capitalists, driven by their international greed for ever more profits for the fewest number of them will get their way...they'll be making all their money here while paying all their most skilled and expensive employees elsewhere. But that can't last for we'll become increasingly poorer ourselves and unable to buy the cheapest goods manufactured by children in sweatshops round the world...and Africa is next...until we find another planet with slaves. We got way off track on what constitutes a good life...way off base. The way we've defined it is leading to our own ruination...but don't worry...pop another pill and flip 500 channels and seek closure. --------------------- |
