...plowing through his 1982 book, "Iraq After The Muslim Conquest". Fascinating. This is a real book, by an associate professor of history at UCLA who's probably a full professot by now...the bibliography is extensive and you can tell he read ALL of ALL the books contained in it. I was edified to learn many things...one is that this "dhimmi" you hear tell so much about never meant "slaves" or second class citizens the way the boys weep about it. It's true the non-Muslims were not of the ruling class...but Jews, Christians and Magians were protected...and whereas Muslims killed each other over trifles of doctrine as the Christians would soon do, they protected non-Muslims...in one instance he realtes a Muslim and Christian being stopped by some sub-sect of Islam...the Muslim was killed, the Christian let go, free and unharmed. Also the new converts to Islam brought with them their own customs and beliefs, including magic, sorcery, extreme piety, self-mortification and of course feast days etc. AND intolerance. Islam was barely formed when it arrived in Iraq and close contact with all the other religions soon created divisions within it. The Muslims weren't immune to intolerance by any means, but it was an intolerance directed at OTHER Muslims....accusing each other of being unbelievers and unleashing violence on their own kind for harmles variations in doctrine which had more to do with power sharing than anything else. Many Muslims held out, never coming to Iraq until after it was conquered and when they arrived demanded special consideration and status depending on whom they were closest to, Uthman or Alli. There were major revolts among the ranks with swords and knives drawn for the greater glory of Allah...more Jewish madness. During all this time the Christian sects went their merry way, unmolested by the Mulsims, happily breaking their own skulls right alongside the Arabs and more recent converts. Later, when Islam defined itself better and hardened its doctrines is no doubt when they began to suppress others...like they have all done. In this book I have as yet to run across the word, "Assyrian". Aprim will be chagrined to note that "Chaldean" is mentioned several times, to denote the group of pagans who worshipped horoscopes and reading human fate in the stars. The Christians are called Nestorians...ain't that cute. The other major sect was the Monophysites, called Jacobites...these two were the major players and went at each other tooth and claw...for the Lord of course. Got to wondering why such an educated person as the author never heard of the Assyrians...well, of course he has...but that's not what THEY called themselves. And while Aprim never heard of Nestorians in his book, except to say it was all big mistake...the Christians at the time of the Conquest NEVER wanted to be called Assyrians. This "love" for the ancient Assyrians is something new among the boys. Back then they were trying as hard as they could to DISTANCE themselves from their pagan past...and many of them still are...remember Paul Younan? For all the time, since supposedly converting to Jesus, the boys have been singing the praises of yahwe and condemming the "bloody Assyrians" who were so mean to the Jews..god's chosen. Neither Jacobites nor Nestorians wanted anything to do with their Assyrian past...and that persisted till the modern era when the British and other Europeans showed up and were FAR more impresed with Assyrian than with Jacobite or Nestorian history. This is all John Joseph says...that the Christians of today, for all practical purposes, have made Christians of themselves at the WILLING expense of anything Assyrian....he goes further and says there is no proof that they are descended directly from the ancients...but the essential point is that as Peter and the other Rabbits claim that anyone who doesn't TALK about being Assyrian can't be...we claim that anyone who TALKS about being Christian can't be Assyrian...that being Assyrian is either something you leave at the door when you change religions...and adopt ANY other religion..or it is something indelible you can't remove, only ignore...which takes in both Muslims who say nothing and Christians who only talk. In the modern era it would seem Christians re-christened themselves "Assyrian"...as they say the Church of The East only recently added the word "Assyrian" to its title...and clearly this has been done with the dimwitted aim of getting a "nation"..a nation for Jesus...something they STILL believe someone will "HELP" them do. This is where being stupid and PROUD of it as well as having your own dictionaries and history books really hurts..the boys are as ignorant as can be of American and European history...they believe that no "Assyian" would attack or kill or steal from another Assyrian...hence they deny Muslim Assyrians equal status because they have "attacked" Christian Assyrians. Do the boys NOT know that Christians have been killing Christians for centuries? Does this make either side NOT Christian? Have they never heard of civil or religious wars in which brother kills sister? How much do they know of American or European history that they believe these people have a deep, abiding and selfless interest in "helping Darkies"? What land have any of THEM "given back"? What precedent would it set in the world for any one of them to "return" land to their indigenous people? Are any of them likely to do such a thing? When have any of them expended treasure and the lives of their own to go HELP some "small nation"? Have NONE of them turned a blind eye to the suffering of Christians or to minorities? Whence this blind faith that any of them will help us? And, finally...have they EVER heard of the treachery of these people in the past...of broken promises and treaties? Have they EVER betrayed us? Yet, with total ignorance and blissfull foolishness they have time and again been willing to lend their support to attacks against their own homelands...and they just did it again and many of them are all for "staying the course"...a phrase those of us familiar with the last genocidal war, against Vietnam, remember well. When Hanna says the boys don't need a dictionary to understand these basic concepts...but have one "of our own"...you know you're in the nursery with some tewwible spoiled brats who have been accustomed since babyhood to have their Mommies guard their triangles....."MOMMY"!!!! --------------------- |
