...fascinating round table discussion about a new book on World War One...why Wilson rushed into it when there was no need and how the world basically fell apart from that very first misguided notion about bringing democracy to the world...most interesting was a segment about British propaganda used to stir up sentiments to get America into the war...something Wilson also wanted badly to do...not wanting Americans to hear about the frightful slaughter in the trenches, the Brits cut the transatlantic cable so that all news would have to pass through London where they could do a "Bush" on it. Terrible losses were downplayed...defeats were declared victories...gory details were fabricated to get Americans hating Germans...my favorite is that old saw about soldiers throwing babies into the air and catching them on bayonets...I never believed it...never. It's popped up in so many war stories you'd think it was part of basic training in Christian countries...turns out it was a total fabrication...even "Assyrians" give "first-hand" accounts of SEEING it done. Also interesting was the fact that the Lusitania, sunk by a German sub and causing the death of American tourists, was indeed packed with ammunition and guns...violating neutrality agreements...and of course Britain lied and said there was nothing on the ship...the sinking of the Lusitania because Germans were "just like that"...fired American public opinion high enough to push us into a war...when it was the desperate attempts of the Brits and French to get us INTO the war that prolonged it and made a peaceful settlement undesirable...which had all sorts of ramifications for our world to the peresent day. And another thing...Wilson insisted that American tourists had a right to travel in war zones and be left in peace...something you'd think any idiot would know better than to do, let alone declare it as a RIGHT. People LIE...in wartime especially...and in Bush's case, as also in Vietnam, they LIE to get us into war...lie to keep us there, lie when they pull out and lie a few years later when they claim we WON the war. It isn't good to lie. --------------------- |
