The Epic of Gilgamesh is a marvel, really. More so when you contrast it with the madness of Judo-Christian-Islam. By comparison it is such a sane view of human beans on this planet. The Judo religions all start with original sin...humans being chased from the presence of god for a "sin"..when the dumb fuck made them and everything else. Torn from God we're supposed to struggle and struggle to get back to him and the garden...and it doesn't happen till you drop dead...no matter how good you are on earth, this place is a Vale of Tears which no one has done more to make us weep over than the Church itself. The other view is that god is always in us and we are in god...that there was never any wrenching and being tossed out to wander and bear children in pain. In that view there is no such thing as a place we have to get to...we ARE the place, if only we could see it. Gilgamesh starts out seeking god elsewhere...as a state og being outside his earthly existance..a plaqce he has to struggle through all sorts of dangers to get to...only to find out he can't do it. The only godly placfe exists inside of him...especially to be expressed in his relationship to the rest of humanity...even if he is an autocratic king...he can at least be a better one. And that includes being a better father, husband and son too. Gilgamesh finds his god within....for THIS lifetime. It's all we can know for certain...it's the wiser course. To believe in monstrous fairy tales shot through with terror and gifts divorces us from our Reason...and nothing makes us uniquely human like our capacity for Reason. Judo religions trash Reason...tell you to check it at the door and buy their pronouncements on their say-so...you wouldn't buy a used car that way but you're supposed to buy god like that? Our mind makes us unique...like flight makes birds unique. What kind of birds would we had if we didn't let them fly for 3000 years? That's the kind of "reason" we now have. Gilgamesh starts out as foolish as any Judo...but comes back wise. --------------------- |
