...of Gilgamesh. Undoubtedly there are other tablets, excavated by and then reburied in Christian vaults, that contain more of the wisdom of the ancients. The Epic has enough in it though to point out distinct differneces between what is laughabbly called the "word of god", the bible...and the Epic. The most glaring is that woman is not the evil source of the undoing of all human and animal life. A significant difference which has many ramifications...how in the name of all that is sacred can men come up with a "religion" that makes evil monsters of their own mothers...sisters, wives, sweethearts and daughters? What kind of a jackass do you have to be to blame OTHER's...your own mother chief among them, for all YOUR fuck-ups? How many hundreds of thousands of women were burned alive, drowned and tortured as withces as a result of this hatred for women? How many women were forced to suffer in loveless marriages where the man was told by his god that all his sufferings were caused by the woman scrubbing the floor beneath his feet? In the Epic it is the woman who tames the wild man-beast Enkidu. To call her a temple prostitute is to miss the point..and leave us not forget the Hebrews had female AND male temple protitutes. Regardless, it is through the act of physical love with a woman that Enkidu is persuaded to leave the animals behind and join civilization. After Gilgamesh's wanderings, when he's come to the very gates of paradise and asked all the absurd questions "great" minds ask and then kill over...he stops for a cool drink and chats up Sidhurri, the Divine Barmaid, what a deligtful image, who tells him to grow up and stop acting like a Jew...she says the gods reserved godly things such as immortality for themselves...that humans must die if they are born...and the entire purpose and source of happiness on earth, which is NOT a testing ground for heaven but all the life we know we can have...is to be in your home...hold your woman to your heart and take your children by the hand...to wash and wear clean clothes and be the best human, commoner or king, that you can be. Woman was no monster to the people of BetNahrain. She was the civilizing force, the one who offers thr wisest counsel and she is the treasure to cherish...she and the children of her body. How much misery have the people of the bible brought to humanity in the last 2000 years and before? For all their talk of love...how many countless and horrendous crimes have found their source in a book which begins by making woman the arch criminal...in a world ruled, dominated and oppressed by men for most of our time here? The man who can see his own mother as the source of all evil...and then his wife and daughter too is a man so cut off from his own humanity as to become a monster. Where the Assyrians used propaganda to make themselves look more terrible...for the purposes of maintaining order so civilization could advance...the Christians have used lies to make themselves appear better than they are...while the truth of what they've done and continue to do is as disgusting a thing as the most barbaric people of all times would be ashamed to be found guilty of. No one...absolutely no one has burned their own mothers at the stake...in quest of the "divine", except Christians. --------------------- |
