Saw a decent enough sounding Reverend on a talk show...woman called in and said she believes the bible was written by men...and not too bright either (mine)...that she treats others as she would like to be treated and she felt that was "values" enough...the kind-sounding man of god asked, "well then what do you do about guilt"? At that she seemed a bit flustered and was cut off anyway...though she did manage to begin to say that she tries to make up for what...and then she was cut off. I don't believe in guilt...I think it's a term and concept for manipulating people especially popular with those who want to crush your spirits...terrify you into coming to them for the flip side..."absolution" Guilt lets you get away with stuff..it allows you to go on doing the things that make you feel guilty and adding any number more to the list because you can always say you're struggling with "Guilt"...like it's a god-given part of your nature...certainly to make errors is natural enough...but if you can be made to feel guilty about your natural proclivity to fuck up...then you're a ripe candidate for the rest of their nonsense...and you're hooked. To screw up is natural enough...guilt is a man-made concept...not natural at all. I think being responsible is a lot healthier than feeling guilty...in that case you simply own up to what you did wrong..what YOU did, not the Devil inside or other demonic forces that took possession of you when you weren't looking or praying hard enough...in the case of responsibility you try your best to make up for your screw-up and if you're at all sincere, seek to avoid such fuck-ups in the future..end of story. Making mistakes, even big ones, is natural and if they're proscribed by society then the Law will deal with you...no shame should attach to it at all besides what you feel, without god adding his two cents. I think it fosters maturity better to take responsibility rather than FEEL guilt...just those two qualifiers...to "take" responsibillity verses to "feel" guilt says it all..the idea that YOU screwed up..not the Devil or any such external force that crept inside you but YOU...you yourself...so there is no excuse, not even a celestial one, or it's hellish reverse. Guilt is a cop-out...you seemingly torture yourself...but go back for seconds with a ready made excuse..."guess the Devil was stronger again". ...I wish any one of these talk show shouters and screamers would take me on in a locked room where they couldn't run away or cut away...there isn't anything formidable to them at all..their "points" are ridiculous and easily refuted...but as it is they might as well be reporting on the daily news shows that science has proven the earth is flat after all. --------------------- |
