I still remember like it was yesterday the day I saw "Z" in San Jose, California....1969 or 70 I believe. I've seen it since and the fact that it was so tame the second time around shows you what an innocent state of denial and ignorance we all were in back then...but at the time, wow! Everyone, and the theatre was packed, walked out in stunned silence...nothing looked the same a mere hour and a half after we'd entered.

The most shocking part to a dumb American audience was that the State would actually be involved in political crimes AND, most unsettling of all, would COVER THEM UP, even to disappearing prominent people with impunity.

I think he directed "Missing" as well?

I'm reminded yet again of words my Russian/Armenian sculptor friend told me in New York where we worked together for a time, in his heavy Boris Badinoff accent..."Fred, you Americans think we Russians are brain-washed", but we KNOW they are lying to us...it is YOU people who actually believe your government"!
