…comment that I am no historian and should stick to sculpture…is Warda an historian? Is Aprim….Odisho….Rosie Malek….Magpie…Jassim? Are ANY of them even close to academics and scholarship? Do any of them do more than read books and write their observations? Look at the way they treat Dr Joseph, who is a recognized scholar and noted historian, and you’ll see what they think of either. Real scholarship includes a disciplined approach to historical facts plus a neutrality that are miles removed from what our christo-nationalists feel they MUST prove. To them history is a junkpile you rummage through looking for what can be of service…they have no reverence, respect or understanding of it. The thousands of history books written over the last 500 years weren’t written for other historians. The best of them aimed to spread a love of history and an honest, accurate approach to it among non-historians. They weren’t writing for themselves, or even for each other, but for the rest of us. I’m not arguing with legitimate historians…I’m reading them and bringing their evidence to shed light on this topic. I’m not guilty of mangling or deliberately misrepresenting history…or failing to understand it, which is what Jumblat accuses me of. On the contrary, it seems that those who make these claims, our christo-nationalists, are guilty of that…as Dr Joseph has shown by giving us a more complete picture of their disreputable “reading” of history…meant to back up their nationalist claims. If the boys are going to mangle history, I commit no such crime in bringing in the material, not making it up, which might clarify the issue…and leave it up to the reader to decide. The belief in a modern Assyrian identity is faith-based. I don’t mean just based on the Christian faith…but on faith, in general. And like the Scholastics who drove themselves mad trying to “prove” logically, that the Christian faith was true and correct…who had to give it up in favor of “blind faith” as the only prop of religion…so too our boys should stop trying to “prove”, by dragging in “history”, their nationalist claims to being Modern Assyrians….as a ploy to gain respect they don’t deserve or lands they haven’t earned, or legitimately stolen. People have to believe they’re modern Assyrians and Chaldeans just because they “believe it”…that’s all. For Aprim to demand Chaldeans “show papers” proving their claim only opens him up to the same demand for proof…a demand he’s never been able to satisfy…except in these tricky and dubious ways used by Warda, Odisho and the rest of them. It would seem, then, that I’m reading and understanding history just fine…and that I’m not the one scrambling its meaning to make a point or “prove” anything. I didn’t fabricate an identity and go looking for proof. I heard all my life and recently read “books” where others are making this preposterous claim…that modern Assyrians exist…it is THEIR claim, not mine. Therefore, if they just what to state it and “believe” it and avoid “proof”, there is nothing to be said against them….let them believe what they want. But…when they assemble “proof”…when they claim to have found evidence in the historical record…then they open themselves up to scrutiny, if for no other reason than to keep them honest. Sure, I’d love to be a lineal descendant of Ashurbanipal….but I’m not going to accept that I am just so I can bask in the reflected glory…while I drive a Taxi or sit in an office. Our christo-nationalists started it…they’re the ones misreading, misunderstanding and perverting the meaning of historical sources…and deliberately too. Let them admit it’s all faith-based and who will bother to argue? But if they’re going to bring in “history”…then they need to be challenged. There’s no way to “prove” any of it. There’s no judge and jury…or executioner. This isn’t a court of law. It’s an intellectual exercise wherein all sides lay out the evidence for each point of view…while challenging the evidence of the others. No one is to be found guilty and then punished. And if the christo-nationalists claim that this is a “dangerous” time to be questioning them…I would say it’s a dangerous time NOT to be doing so for we just saw them cheer the United States on to a war against the people of Iraq, in the guise of getting what “they deserve”…a homeland etc. which has been a monumental tragedy for all concerned, the effects of which will continue despoiling that region for decades to come. And they’ve done it before in pursuit of what “they deserve”. This claim to an Assyrian homeland has caused nothing but grief to the Christians still trying to live in Iraq, the ones who did NOT run to the West to “liberate Assyria”. And those remaining Christians can only hope to remain if all claims to a homeland are put in the trash where they belong…these “prooves” have only served as fuel, along with the lies about the cruelty of Islam, to hound and harry Christians out of Iraq or into early graves…while those making this claim are living free and at peace elsewhere, ghoulishly adding up and “celebrating” their “martyrs” as a strategy by which they hope to win the pity of “the world”. Put up or shut up. --------------------- |
