...No one ever asks a German to prove who he is...or a Greek to prove he is Greek...so, why must modern Assyrians prove they are Assyrians?" I was shocked to hear this point made by a good and wise friend of mine...someone I thought would have known better...as man of science and widely educated. The simple answer is that a German, Greek, Frenchwoman, all of them, definitely have to prove who they are. They don't have to prove it when they are standing around with their friends...but they have to prove it, with official documents, whenever they apply for anything significant. At the border they will not take your word for it that you are French, or German, or Greek....you will have to show papers, real ones. Not even "speaking the language" will prove who you are for anyone can learn a language. Any time you want to make a claim on property or an inheritance you definitively have to prove who you are. You can't just say, "this land belonged to a fellow named Ashurbanipal and that is my name too, so give me the land because he died and left it to me". --------------------- |
