Israeli sealed archives recently made public shed new light on the Arab Israeli War of 1948. We know already, contrary to modern Jewish lore, that the Arabs hardly comprised a solid, monolithic bloc opposed to tiny Israel…on the contrary the five Arab nations were all maneuvering against each other, failing to support each other, trying to undermine each other, with no centralized command and were easy to pick off one by one…after some initial victories. The first truce imposed on both sides allowed the Israelis to stockpile arms from the Eastern Bloc nations which did not respect the arms embargo the West imposed on both sides…when fighting resumed the Israelis fielded more troop who outgunned the fragmented Arabs and defeat was inevitable.

As a result of their experience in World War Two the Jews were as motivated as any people have ever been to make it a fight to the death…plus which they’d just escaped from years at the hands of the most efficient killing machine since the Romans and had learned form the “masters” if you will. By contrast the Arab countries had all emerged from the effects of colonialism and Transjordan was still under the thumb of Britain, it’s main military commander and several officers were British. These countries were still struggling to bring some order and cohesion to the various ethnic and religious minorities now encircled by new borders drawn up arbitrarily, or to serve their own purposes, by the French and British. They hardly had any national consciousness and the rulers lived in fear of their own officers…the Arab armies were never ready for an all out war against anyone…rather they were used to quell disturbances among the population, sort of a glorified police force…plus which no Arab government could afford or dared to commit sufficient troops of money and arms because they needed the majority of it to police their own countries.

The Israelis were as totally committed as any group of people has been, the Arabs madeonly a token display and the leadership was shot through with suspicion and intrigue at one another. That doesn’t minimize Israeli success or courage…just places the situation in context which condemns the Arabs even more for waging any kind of a war so half-heartedly and disasterously. Had the Arabs made no attack and had they accepted the Partition and the White Paper later, they would have spared countless lives and suffering and wound up with a much better result for the Palestinians than they emerged with…if you’re going to fight at all, make it worthwhile or skip it.

Not only would the Palestinians been better off but the Arab governments would have fared far better. As a result of their half-hearted efforts, spurred on mostly by the clamor of their populace who felt, at the end, that their own governments had either collaborated with the British or, worse, the Zionists, in order to explain their humiliating defeat…the stage was set for disruption and even assassination as one by one those government leaders were done away with…mostly by the officer corps which the politicians tried to blame for their own lackluster support…and that led to future coups and the rule of military strong-men in almost all five Arab nations which created martial law or at least the paranoia that stifled all dissent, freedom of the press and intellectual growth and democratic development.

But treachery had its part. King Abdullah of Transjordan made agreements with the Israelis allowing them to create their independent state and promising not to attack them in return for his taking over of Arab Palestine and making it part of Transjordan. When war came he was forced to fight due to Arab public opinion, but he was always opposed to a Palestinian state…which even the Israelis, by contrast, supported. In addition his plea for a “Greater Syria” made that country’s leader wary of being swallowed up as a part of Transjordan so that the only reason Syria fielded an army at all was to discourage King Abdullah’s plans…they fought no offensive…and neither did the others beyond an initial thrust here and there…and you don’t win wars by being on the defensive.

These newly released documents also show a deliberate policy of ridding the new Israeli state of Arabs, and some Christians, through massacre and forced evictions and of course not allowing refugees to return. The Israeli government had no desire to have a majority Arab population to rule…they’ve said all along it was just the result of war that refugees fled, or that their own leaders told them to leave, but the truth, as we now learn, is it was a deliberate effort to make them leave through threats and massacres.

In the never ceasing effort of our Christians to place Muslims in the worst possible light, someone said that the Grand Mufti of Palestine was a devotee of Hitler’s and had called for the expulsion or worse, of all Jews in Palestine.

Even if that were true, how does it compare to what the Christians actually DID, and not just what they “called for”? Let’s review the position of Jews in Germany and the rest of Europe, and the Jews in Palestine. Palestinians became alarmed at the growing numbers of Jewish refugees from Europe, who fled their countries only because of Christian-led attacks against them. Coupled with the funds made available to them, these recent immigrants were able to buy up Arab lands…as they had every right to do. But when the UN decided on partition, of forcing an Israeli state on the Palestinians, many Palestinians, quite naturally, resented this foreign intervention into their country and lives. And when the war came and Europeans armed the Israelis, while the Arabs could buy no weapons, their resentment only grew.

If there was anger and even fury at the Zionists, there is at least some tangible justification for it…let’s examine the status of Jews living among Christians in Europe…were Zionists in Europe stockpiling weapons to fight against the Christians? In spite of what lunatic Christians say, Jews in Europe were especially law-abiding and living in constant fear of pogroms and anti-Jewish sentiment. The Jews literally did nothing to provoke the kinds of hostility Christians felt for them…they posed no threat at all to their countries…on the contrary they contributed in every field of culture, science and business…and yet, because they stood accused of “killing” ONE Jew, one of their own, 1933 years before…their children and grandchildren to the crack of doom were “enemies” of the Christians.

While condemning the Palestinian Muslims for “not liking Jews”, Christians completely discount or rewrite their own horrendous treatment of Jews, culminating in the Death Camps which were a large part of the reason Palestinians had any problem with Jews, or reason to “dislike them”. What was the reason the Christians had, compared to this and by what right do Christians condemn Muslim treatment of Jews when it was Christian attitudes and behaviors and the unparalleled crimes against Jews which THEY committed that brought Jews and Muslims into conflict in the first place, where their relationship had been cordial throughout history and far better than it ever was between Jew and Christian?
