I live in a neighborhood with a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Buddhist, an agnostic, a Gnostic and ten atheists. It’s a quiet neighborhood or would be if the Christian would stop banging on our doors trying to save us. This Christian glowers at the rest of us and tells us we’re damned to all eternity…says he feels nothing but pity for us for our errors…says it’s a wonder the authorities don’t take our children away since we’re raising them in sin and ignorance of the one true way of salvation through Jesus Christ. He’s even offered to wash us in the blood of a lamb he keeps in his backyard.

Not a weekend goes by that he isn’t pounding on our doors with unbelievable offers of joy coupled with dire warnings of suffering. We’ve each told him we feel fine just as we are but he tells us that’s Satan speaking and that he’s bought our souls and will take us straight to hell as soon as we die. Our children are frightened by his own who taunt them on the way to school with shouts of “Devil’s spawn” and “Sinful scum, Jesus loves you”. The other day his fat ten year-old stuck a branch through the spokes of my six year-old daughter’s bicycle and told her the crack in her head as she hit the sidewalk was a “taste of things to come in hell” which she could avoid if only she would “open her heart” accept Jesus the way he had.

We’ve held meetings late at night to discuss the situation but always the next day our Christian neighbor seems to know about it and he screams at us that we’re “attacking the Lord” and want to drive “Jesus away”, that ignoring him is “ignoring the one great Truth”. We don’t know what to do. Some of us have even thought of joining his religion just to get him off our backs but then we discovered that he’s in a war with Christians living nearby so we don’t see any way out even if we join his church.

The strangest thing is that he’s called the police to say he’s being attacked by us because we refuse to open our doors when he comes pounding on them, bible in hand. He says this makes him feel bad and rejected and that’s as good as any attack and he wants protection. Even the police have begun to look at us strangely because there’s only one of him and so many more of us. The feeling is that we must be picking on him, especially as he casts such a long face and weeps whenever the police show up, saying he feels nothing but love for us and blesses us in their presence.

We’re law-abiding citizens but if someone would just kill this guy what a serene neighborhood it would be again. What we can’t understand is why someone with such a pleasant Eternity waiting for him bothers to live at all….unless it’s to make us miserable.
