He, in common with Hitchens and other people you would consider radical, or progressive, still has this blind-spot when it comes to assessing what they call a threat from Muslim extremism. Makes me think of all the wise, humane, and cultured Germans and other Europeans who came completely unhinged at the mention of Jews. On his most recent show he was complaining about the choice of title by an author critical of American government...the title is "American Taliban". The author made some excellent arguments for what he meant: that there is the potential in America, as they chip away at the Constitution, for Christian extremists to again visit hell on this planet. Maher made a heartfelt case for "we are not like the Taliban". The answer was, "not yet". But there is another point to be made..and it was evident in this conversation. Only Islam and Muslims were mentioned...nowhere was there any mention of their nationality...while Americans were ONLY called Americans and never Christians. If we call all American acts of violence acts of Christian violence, then we change the argument, change the rules...and you should always change the rules to suit yourself first...because that's what they do. Also Maher asked what was wrong with the statement "on 9/11 we were attacked by Muslims". He says it is a simple fact. Maybe, but it is not so simple as it seems. No doubt there were "filthy Jews" too...or "greedy money-lending Jews"....or Jews who saw Christians as "enemies". Those too were simple statements of facts and probablities...but we learned too late what lay behind them and what they could lead to. The notion that Islam is somehow hard-wired to kill Christians and Americans is ludicrous and can't be proven...but it doesn't need to be...same as no one had to prove anything against Jewsish children...they were just Jewish and that was enough. Muslims didn't start this war with America and Europe...they did. Christians did. They did it by firts murdering enough Jews to convince the survivors that they were unwelcome among Christians...and then planted them in a desert surrounded by Muslims they proceeded, with Christian backing, to disposseses and murder over the years...they did it by planting a European colony of racists among them and supporting them blindly for decades...until Muslims finally had enough and the extremists among them took up what weapons they could find to defend themselves and fight back...and THEN we said "Islam hates us". Why not identify the religion of those who lied to attack an innocent country, starving to death 700,000 of their babies? Why not identify them as Christian Extremists? Is that because this action is not EXTREME? Not extreme for a Christian that is. Why not say Christians starved to death 700,000 Iraqi babies? That's also a "simple truth". --------------------- |
