As upsetting as it is, the near-creation of the modern nation of Kurdistan allows us a close look at how this process works. The birth is preceded by much violence and bloodshed, as always. As soon as possible, as in most revolutions, the media and school systems are revamped and put to work to legitimize the theft and dissenting voices must be done away with. It may be deplorable but it’s normal and usual. If you want to fight something, understand it first. We say there is no Kurdish history. But there doesn’t need to be. They will now create it. This is what counts. Dr. Donny George, a much respected man among us who was, curiously, not permanently smeared as a “traitor” for working with the government of Saddam all these years, has just entered the fray by stating that there is no Kurdish history. I assume he meant in Iraq...no archaeological sites etc. While this is true it hardly matters to the practical outcome. There were no European artifacts in North America for thousands of years, yet for all of that the Europeans made their home there and then took it over completely, rewriting its history in the process. The Kurds are simply trying to legitimize their seizure. They don’t have to. It’s a shamefaced game people in that sort of position play. It’s also what they’ll start teaching in their schools. But they’re hardly unique in that. What nation doesn’t lie about its origins and then sanctifies those lies by publishing “books” containing them for future generations to read and believe? In this war on Iraq we saw lies, admitted and acknowledged lies, paraded as truths before our eager-to-believe eyes. So why can’t the Kurds play it that way to suit themselves? The important lesson for us is how these things are done…how it almost requires lying and cheating to get them done and how little Issaiah and justice and truth have to do with things here on earth. We don’t necessarily have to learn to play by these rules, but we should accept that if this game of “Let’s Build A Nation” is one we wish to enter, or think we do, then these are its rules. They are the rules because it’s the way everyone set them up long before we came along to play. If we choose to play by our own rules then we’ll be eliminated in the first round…as we have been. --------------------- |
