The renowned and controversial cinematographer, Haskell Wexler, who made his directorial debut with the 1969 film, "Medium Cool", and has been active in film as a director of photography (D.P) - as far back as his beautiful black & white work in Elia Kazan's film "America, America" (1960) - has consistently contributed in fighting against injustice: not only in America, but globally. He was D.P. for John Sayles' film "Matewan" (I think), about the "Matewan Massacre". He also was the only cameraman trusted to film the former Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), which later became the "Weathermen", and subsequently, the "Weather Underground", when the group went incognito during the 70's. In simple words, he's a true "mensch", as is his long-time friend, writer, filmmaker and activist, Saul Landau. In this documentary, "Brazil: A Report on Torture", the two activist/friends interview the radicals (and victims) of Brazil's U.S. backed fascist military junta. The interviews take place in Allende's Chile (1971), before the Nixon/Kissinger devious covert operation toppled the democratically elected Salvador Allende, supplanting the greedy, sadist Pinochet in his place. The sad, cold reality that manifested was that once Pinochet was in power, his regime went after these revolutionaries, sending most of them back to Brazil to be dealt with... by means of torture and a slow-grinding death (and even extreme depression leading to suicide). http://www.cultureunplugged.com/play/3648/Brazil-Report-on-Torture (Pancho, if you have problems accessing this, please let me or Jeffrey know - you must watch this.. Rashad, you're gonna dig this, khuni.) --------------------- |
